Vegetarian Experience In Lebanon
First Lebanese Vegetarian Experience
For Christmas 2018, I decided to spend time in Lebanon. I hadn’t been there for a while and it was the first time I visit since I changed my diet in February 2018 to Vegan and September 2018 to Vegetarian. During my flight, I thought I would give up when I get there since I love Lebanese grilled meat, Kafta, Taouk sandwiches (Lebanese grilled chicken sandwiches), Kebbeh, and a huge list of Lebanese dishes that includes meat, lamb and chicken.
To my surprise, my family was prepared to support me on my Vegan/Vegetarian journey and provided me the strength I needed to stay on track. Both my parents did their best to cook food at home that was vegetarian friendly, and make sure we go to restaurants that offer Tabbouleh (Lebanese traditional salad, check out our recipe here!) and hummus. They also were constantly enthusiastic and happy to show me how they have been eating healthier and consuming more vegetarian dishes (and even reducing the amount of processed food we had at home)!
A Nearly 100% Vegetarian Christmas Dinner
For Christmas dinner, we spent it at my cousins’ house. For the first time, we had a nearly 100% vegetarian Christmas dinner! Aside one dish that contained meat, every other dish was vegetarian prepared by my mom, aunt, or grandmother. It was nice to see everyone’s reaction at the end of the evening when we realized that our Christmas dinner was not just mostly vegetarian, but more importantly delicious and healthy.
I was surprised to also learn that one of my cousins has greatly reduced his meat/chicken intake and has become an expert at making delicious vegetarian salads! I guess its true when we say that being vegan/vegetarian is contagious in a very positive way! Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to visit 100% vegan restaurants in Lebanon as those mostly do not exist (aside falafel shops). But I did recently come across this recently opened restaurant that I cant wait to try out on my next trip!

I have been traveling to Japan for more than 5 years and moved to Tokyo in August 2017 to launch my startup Pedaru. I became plant-based to explore its health benefits and myths. Previously, I used to eat at least one of the following food items on a daily basis: chicken, pork, beef, lamb and fish. I thought it would be impossible to let go of all of that, but after understanding how badly animals are treated today, what companies are putting in our food and how important nutrition is, my perspective and mindset changed. If I can do it, so can you! My favourite documentary and book on plant-based topics are Food Inc. and How Not To Die. Check them out
